While there are many legitimate and lucrative jobs out there, scam artists are rubbing their hands together in glee at the fresh new prospect of a new crop of desperate people who are willing to sacrifice common sense. These people are ripe to handing over what little money they do have in the hopes of making quick cash. But buyer beware.
Chances are the more hype, the more money the ad says you will make in a "single day!" the more likely something is a scam. The general consensus is that anyone hoping to earn money without working for it just isn't going to.
All jobs available on the internet, from filling out surveys to multi-level marketing schemes, involve hard work---and sometimes for not as much money as you would hope for. Sure, there are people out there making good money working these jobs, but it is always best to set realistic goals and do your homework.
Some sites to avoid are the ones that seem to promise endless amounts of cash for doing almost nothing---as long as you give the company money to "set up" your home business.
The Federal Trade Commission has targeted schemes including medical billing scams and envelop stuffing, as well as writing e-mails as work at home job areas to avoid.
One of the top ten scams of 2008, according to the Better Business Bureau, involved a work at home scheme as a mystery shopper. The victim is sent a check, told to deposit part of it as their "wage," then wire the rest back to the "employer." They are then told to fill out a survey rating the wiring business transaction experience. The problem is, the check they deposit doesn't clear, and they just wired their own money to a scamster.
The one way to identify a scam or a business opportunity that is more likely to cost money than make you money is to be offered lots of money for little work. Anyone who claims you can make money with any business and not work for it is something you should avoid.
On the other hand, some legitimate jobs, such as filling out surveys for cash or MLMs, are often inaccurately described as scams. Many MLMs are legitimate business, but no one should claim the money you make comes without working for it. And while you can earn money filling out surveys, don't fall for any claims that you can make hundreds of dollars a day. That's virtually impossible unless you stay up twenty-four hours a day doing nothing but filling out surveys.
Do your homework and don't be afraid to ask questions. The lure of easy money has been around for hundreds of years, far longer than the internet has been around. But with high-tech scam artists out there, it is easier to fall prey to this kind of criminal.
